Despite the fact that the weekly Tuesday and Friday market has moved from Hasselt to the Kolonel Dusartplein, the Grote Markt is located in the center of the shopping city of Hasselt.
Around the year 1300, this square was created, which became the center of Hasselt. The streets that led to the four city gates converged here. Initially known as Op den marct, it also received names such as Graenmarct and Coorenmerct, ultimately to be called Grote Markt.
