Het Steengelaag is a recognized nature reserve owned by the municipality of Stekene. The management was transferred to Natuurpunt Waasland Noord in 1992.
In the years 1800 – 1900 clay was extracted in this part of Stekene. This created two clay pits. After the cessation of clay mining in 1977, nature has been given a free hand here and a rich and varied vegetation has been created.
Traces of exploitation can still be seen throughout the area, such as the presence of the clay dredger.
