Chicory – in English 'Belgian endive' and according to Van Dale synonymous with 'Brussels praise' – is currently grown in containers with a lot of electronics. Belgium – especially Central Brabant – is the second largest world producer after France. The idea for a museum arose when the traditional cultivation of chicory root, which is chicory, was abandoned in the 1970s and 1980s. The museum shows how the 'white gold' was grown and traded by hard labour, but also discusses social and cultural aspects, and of course the gastronomic side of the chicory business. It is located in the old auction rooms on the bridge of Kampenhout-Sas, an ideal starting point for cycling and hiking tours.
WEETJE Witloof was 'invented' around 1850 in the Brussels Botanique or Botanical Garden. There, head gardener Frans Breziers succeeded in growing chicory with crops.
