The red dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) is easily recognizable by its red twigs. The shrub blooms in spring with white blossoms, followed by dark red berries in September. The berries of the red dogwood are loved by birds but are not edible for humans.
There is also yellow dogwood. These berries are edible, you can make delicious syrup and jam from them. So be careful not to confuse both dogwoods: red dogwood gets its name from the red branches, yellow dogwood (with its red fruits), gets its name from its yellow blossoms.
