The tree pipit is an inconspicuous bird that looks very similar to other pipits such as the meadow pipit, but is slightly more powerfully striped. However, the bird is best identified by its song, which is performed from a high position or during a song flight. The song consists of a loud trill and ends with tsia, tsia, tsia.
Unlike meadow pipits, tree pipits are mainly found in wooded areas. The song flight typically begins and ends in a tree rather than on the ground. Like other pipits, the tree pipit also builds its nest well hidden on the ground.
