When the American Air Force bombed the railway installations on May 9, 1944, the beautiful villa of Oscar Coomans de Brachène was completely reduced to ashes. At that time, the 'Fontaine Castle' had been claimed by the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. Among the German soldiers who stayed here, there were no casualties that day. This was not the case at the nearby 'school of learning' where more than seventy German soldiers lost their lives. After the war, the destroyed building was demolished, and a new castle in Neo-Renaissance style was built by the Coomans de Brachène family between 1946 and 1948.
