The patron saint of Aalbeke is Saint Cornelius. As a pilgrim, he is said to have walked around the church of Aalbeke three times. Whether this is true, we don't know. Aalbeke was a true place of pilgrimage for a long time. Until World War II, 25,000 pilgrims descended on Aalbeke every year to demand protection from St. Cornelius against (mainly) childhood diseases. Today, almost a thousand pilgrims still flock to Aalbeke.
