Now there are 129 social housing units here. The project has been praised in the architectural press. But once, plague victims and wounded soldiers languished here. It was a doomed place filled with misery. The Pest House or House of Saint Macarius was built on a remote, barren piece of land along the Nederschelde, known as 't Sant. From 1582 onwards, plague sufferers were sheltered here, but primarily isolated.
