The 31-metre-high watchtower is a replica of the derrick with which André Dumont extracted the first coal from the ground in 1901. The watchtower is freely accessible up to a height of 25 meters. Once you reach the top, you can scan the horizon to the terrils of Eisden, Winterslag and Waterschei and you have a beautiful view over the Hoge Kempen National Park.
Hundreds of thousands of years ago , the Maas was a little further west and came to where this tower stands.
