Former meat hall - Mechelen

The Oude Mechelse Vleeshal was designed by the architect Victor Louckx and opened its doors for the first time in 1881 .

Characteristic of the building are the two bull heads both at the entrance and at the exit. There is a bull's head at the entrance and a cow's head at the exit. Below the heads of the cows is the coat of arms of the city of Mechelen with the inscription "In Fide Constans" , which translates as " To marry" .

Until then, the Mechelaar bought their meat at the weekend market at Leermarkt. Due to the growing population of Mechelen, the butchers had to look for another base: De Oude Mechelse Vleeshal. The hall has been modernized over the years with plumbing and electricity and a cold room. After the Second World War the building fell into disrepair and in 1967 the butcher shop was closed. The building later served as a stamp hall.

The old market, built in 1881, was transformed into a modern smaak market in 2019. The base for 14 Smaakmakers and 7 Gangmakers . From Vietnam and Morocco to Mexico and Ireland: the large selection of authentic world cuisines will surprise you. You have just a breathtaking environment .
