The freedom tree in Haasdonk was planted as a linden tree in 1830 and serves as a reminder for the local population of the Belgian Revolution and the secession from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the same spot, in front of the town hall, a French freedom tree had previously been planted. This freedom tree or pole symbolized the freedom and democracy of the people, a sign of a renewed and more modern society shaped by the ideas of the French Revolution. In 1969, the Belgian freedom tree was replaced again by the current specimen.
