The Pöhl dam is the second largest in Saxony by the size of its storage capacity and the third largest by the height of its dam structure above foundation and by its water surface area. The dam serves for flood protection, drinking water supply, low water elevation, energy generation, and recreational purposes.
The dam wall of the Pöhl dam is a curved gravity dam made of concrete. The dam was constructed between 1958 and 1964 near Jocketa in the Vogtland region. The dam is named after the village of Pöhl, which now lies underwater. In fact, the submerged village serves as a diving attraction. The impounded water, the Trieb, is a tributary of the White Elster.
