In the town hall of Lüneburg, a ham is exhibited. The ham from Lüneburg is thus a delicacy. According to legend, this is where the discovery of the cured ham was made (although there is at least one place in France that also claims this). A hunter was on a hunt in the vicinity of Lüneburg and was able to injure a wild boar. Although seriously wounded, it managed to escape. The animal succumbed to its injuries and fell into one of the brined lakes of Lüneburg. There is salt in the underground here. The animal was only discovered by the hunter some time later. But by then, the meat had already absorbed the salt from the water. This would be the ‘discovery’ of the cured ham from Lüneburg. Definitely worth trying a slice.
