The museum is located in the listed historic Haus Hövener. During her lifetime, Wilhelmine Hövener founded the Briloner Eisenberg and Trades Foundation – Brilon City Museum.
The museum was founded in 1983 and was initially located in the Haus des Gastes. Later, the museum was housed in the Henning House in Heinrich-Jansen-Weg. After the renovation of Haus Hövener, the Stadtmuseum is located there on the market square under its new name Museum Haus Hövener, and the existing exhibits have been integrated as far as it makes sense.
