The Klüt Tunnel is a 316-metre-long, former railway tunnel of the Bielefeld–Hamelin railway, the eastern, now disused part of which was called the Bega Valley Railway. The single-track line crossed the Klüt near the Weser and the tunnel therefore bore his name. The Klüt Tunnel was opened to traffic in 1897 and closed in 1980. Since then, it has served as a shelter for bats.
The tunnel belonged to the Bega Valley Railway as a single-track branch line between Hamelin and Lage, which later also ran to Bielefeld. The line is named after the river Bega, in whose valley it runs between Barntrup and Lemgo. The plans for the construction were made at the beginning of the 1880s. After Prussia and the Principality of Lippe had agreed on financing in the early 1890s, work began. The biggest obstacle was the Weser in Hamelin. This is where the most structurally difficult structures on the line were built, with the 316-metre-long Klüt Tunnel and the Weser Bridge. The difficult route with a tunnel through the mountain was deliberately chosen, although a route upstream between the Ohrberg and the Klüt would have been easier from a structural point of view. However, this would have required the construction of long dams in the Weser valley, which would have narrowed the valley and increased the risk of flooding.
