The historic Wesel railway bridge was built between 1872 and 1874 by the Cologne-Minden Railway Company (CME) as part of the Hamburg-Venlo Railway and was the northernmost Rhine bridge in Germany during its existence. From 1917 onwards, an additional road bridge existed near the railway bridge until both bridges were destroyed in the course of the Second World War. Only the road bridge was then rebuilt.
