The Animals and the Fields

Freerslev Kotel is a farm where we, Erik and Inge, produce both meat and plant-based food. Erik is a full-time farmer and is responsible for the daily operations of the farm. Inge takes care of the visiting service at the farm and, of course, also helps to take care of all the animals. There are about 300 head of beef cattle of all ages on the farm. They are in loose housing systems and go out to pasture every summer, where they help with nature conservation in large natural areas in many places.

On the farm, there are four barn sections where the calves and cows are separated by age and by when they are due to calve. Every day we mix 6-9 tons of feed based on different formulas that suit the growth of the individual animals. We are very focused on sustainability, so the animals' feed also includes day-old vegetables and bread from grocery stores, organic waste from a salad producer, spent grains from two nearby breweries, and waste waffles from ice cream shops in North Zealand.

On the fields around the farm, we grow various crops on a total of 300 hectares, which are used both for the cows' feed and for food products. Half of the fields are grown organically, and the other half is farmed conventionally.

There are also other animals on the farm: 11 breeding cats (and kittens), 3 rabbits, and many hens and chickens, which are also part of the education on the farm.
