Description

San Matteo is one of six parishes built after the reconquest of Jerez in 1264.

The Gothic church of San Mateo is one of the oldest in the city . The single-aisled interior, with a brick floor, and the side chapels with Mudejar vaults house popular and venerated statues of the Virgen del Desconsuelo and the Cristo de las Penas, from the 18th century.

The former main entrance was bricked up after the Lisbon earthquake .

Of great importance are the chapels that open onto the nave of the church, in which the Mudejar and Renaissance styles stand out.
