THE FORT OF THE DUNES

Description

The Fort des Dunes, the only land fort of the SERE DE RIVIERES type built on the coast, was to be one of the centrepieces of the defence of Dunkirk. The total area of the structure and the surrounding glacis is 12 hectares. About 40,000,000 bricks were needed to build it between 1878 and 1880.In 1940, it became the command post of the 12th DIM under the orders of General Janssen at the time of Operation Dynamo in June 1940. Occupied by the Germans, it became part of the Atlantic Wall and an annex of the Zuydcoote battery
