Built on stilts at the end of the 19th century, the Officers' Mess is one of the buildings necessary for military life. It was offered to the garrison by the companies in charge of the construction of forts, works and batteries around Verdun. In 1890, the military population was as large as the civilian population. Numerous barracks still mark the Verdun landscape.
