The ruins of the Grand Arnsbourg, located between Philippsbourg and Niederbronn-les-Bains, belong to a castle built in the mid 12th century. The purpose of the construction of the castle was the surveillance of the Zinsel Valley which led to Bitche. In 1229, Louis d'Arnsbourg was the first occupant of the castle; in 1332, it passed into the hands of the Sires de Lichtenberg, until the extinction of the family in 1481. It then became the property of the Counts of Deux-Pont-Bitche, before being partially destroyed in 1525, during the Peasants' War.
For security reasons, it has been forbidden to visit the castle since 1999.
