Phalsbourg, birthplace of Emile Erckmann. A fortified pink sandstone city, Phalsbourg still houses precious testimonies of its proud military past: barracks, powder magazines, the Porte de France in the west and the Porte d'Allemagne in the east which mark the city limits in a magnificent Vauban architecture. The garrison town was fortified by Vauban in 1680.
