This place is linked to an enormous eruption of the Italian volcano at Campi Flegrei. That eruption took place 40,000 years ago and was spreading ashes over a great part of Europe. Also here. During an excavation in the cave, scientists found a layer of this ash, 10m below the currrent surface. They could date the tephra particles of the ashes, and the experts found human artefacts below that layer, a proof that the human occupation in this cave is at least from 40,000 years ago.
