The church was built in 1342 by order of Eleonora D'Aragona.
The church was expanded in the 16th century. The church has two portals , the main one on Piazza del Carmine is in Catalan Gothic style and consists of two octagonal pillars and a triple bastion ring with a flower at the top. The secondary is located on Via Incisa and is made of white marble, executed in 1468 after a design by Francesco Laurana and made by Pietro di Bonitate.
The interior is rich in stuccowork with 17th century decorations by Orazio Ferraro. Also by Ferraro are the painting with the Madonna dell'Itria and the paintings with the Crucifixion and the Madonna del Soccorso .
The building is currently used as an exhibition space.
