The Eelerberg belonged to the Vening Meinesz family. Felix Andries Vening Meinesz was a Dutch geophysicist and geodesist who did pioneering work for geophysics and geodesy. His merits lie in devising a method to measure gravity very accurately. This made it possible to measure gravity at sea for the first time, and so he discovered many gravitational anomalies above the seabed. He later linked these anomalies to the continental shift.
