The Citadel in 's-Hertogenbosch is a former fort. This fort was constructed between 1637 and 1645.
One nickname of the Citadel is The Papenbril. This name is attributed to the fact that it needed to keep an eye on the Catholic inhabitants of 's-Hertogenbosch.
At the site where the Citadel was built, there were houses in the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as the Orthen Gate that stood at Bastion Orthenpoort. This gate dates back to the period between 1315 and 1350. The construction of this gate rendered the Brussels Gate unnecessary.
The citadel was a fort with five points in the bastion. The construction of the fort started shortly after the capture of the city in 1629.
