During the German attack in May 1940 as well as in the autumn of 1944, Opheusden had to be evacuated because it had fallen into the line of fire. In the aftermath of Operation Market Garden until the liberation in May 1945, Opheusden was on the dividing line between the occupied and liberated territory and therefore heavy fighting took place.
Because of the many destructions, the necessary reconstruction work had to be carried out after the war.
