History
In 1919, the artist Carl Garschagen from the German Siegburg built a villa here. He preferred to paint nature and cloudscapes and presumably gave it the name. After him, the noblewoman Brantsen lived there, hailing from Rheden. In 1931, Wolkenland along with the villa was purchased by the Amsterdam Lyceum as a school retreat. Twelve hectares of forest went to Huis Bergh. The building on the hill was destroyed by fire in 1932 and by the ravages of war in 1944. During the challenging time of reconstruction, Gunning again succeeded in getting approval and funding for the construction of the current Wolkenland. It was officially opened on June 28, 1952, by the then Minister In 't Veld.
For many years, Wolkenland has been the school retreat of the Amsterdam Lyceum. Wolkenland has been enthusiastically managed for 27 years by the management couple Jacqueline and Kees Veraart.
