The Woerdense Verlaat is a lock built in the Grecht.
The Grecht is a wetering between the Oude Rijn and the Kromme Mijdrecht. The Grecht was dug at the end of the 14th century and served for the drainage of the surrounding polder land, but was also used for shipping.
A lock (or exit) is a hydraulic engineering work of art that makes it possible to bring ships from one water level to another. A ship can be gunned up or gunned down with it, up or down respectively. A lock consists of a lock gully or lock chamber with a lock gate on both sides.
