Description

Below Schoonebeek, at a depth of about 800 metres, lies the largest oil field on the mainland of Western Europe. The field was discovered in 1943 and after the war, Shell and Esso founded the Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM) to put the field into production.
Between 1947 and 1996, the NAM produced about 250 million barrels of oil from this field. Because the oil is viscous and tough, the oil was increasingly difficult to extract. Further extraction was too expensive and oil extraction was stopped in 1996. In Schoonebeek and in the surrounding area, a few 'yes-men' have remained as a reminder of the past.
In 2011, the field was put back into production. Thanks to new techniques (horizontal wells in combination with steam injection), the oil can be brought to the surface more easily.
