Here, in collaboration with the Trappist monks of the Our Lady of Koningshoeven Abbey, all La Trappe beers are developed and brewed.
Worldwide, there are only seven Trappist beers that are allowed to carry the Authentic Trappist Product logo. Six of these come from Belgium, one from the Netherlands, and that is La Trappe. Only if the beer is brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery under the supervision and responsibility of the monks can it bear the name ‘Trappist beer’. A portion of the proceeds from La Trappe beers goes to the monasteries in Indonesia and Uganda that originated from Koningshoeven.
When the Trappists settled near Tilburg, things did not initially go very smoothly. They rented three farms from a factory owner, but the land was poor and the work did not yield enough to live on. One of the first fathers was the son of a brewer from Munich and started a brewery. La Trappe is now known for its artisanal, stronger beers.
The Trappists have a strong connection to nature. Here you see the innovative and entrepreneurial character of the Trappists reflected. An ingenious water filtration system has been established. The water is partly purified by plants and returned to nature. By 2025, the Trappists hope to be climate neutral. This aspiration fits well with an order that has traditionally been adept at responding to developments in society.
