History and number of sticks
Viticulture in South Limburg was the most normal thing in the world until the Napoleonic era, but disappeared at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is blamed on the big little Frenchman who has no competition
would have been willing to tolerate for their own national product, but it is more likely that climate chilling and possibly also grape diseases have made viticulture in this southern part of the Netherlands unattractive.
From 1975 onwards, the summers in Western Europe became warmer again and Limburg now has about sixty orchards, many of which are still small, but several have now grown into attractive and thriving domains. Winery Fromberg is one of them. Since 1991, the first vines have been planted on these gentle slopes of the Fromberg, and today this vineyard has about 15,000 vines.
Grape varieties and wine varieties
The grape varieties that grow here in the sweltering southern sun are: Auxerrois, Bacchus, Müller Thurgau, Reichensteiner, Riesling, Solaris and Pinot Noir and these end up in the bottles as still and sparkling
Wines.
Terroir
The soil of the Fromberg vineyard consists of mineral-rich limestone, this (poor) subsoil ensures that the vines have to work hard to transport their minerals and nutrients, so that
the vine becomes strong and vigorous and produces flavorful grapes.
Adjacent to this slope is a protected nature reserve, here grows a rare orchid, the Ophrys Apifera, this orchid only grows on a very pure soil, which is why Winery Fromberg has linked this name 'Ophrys' to its own sparkling wines.
Landscape and climate
The vineyard is located entirely on the south, so the grapes can fully enjoy the sun's rays all day long and can thus build up sufficient sugars. Here in the vineyard the temperature is always
a few degrees higher than in the village. The slope has a gradient of approximately 20%.
Wine process
The entire wine process is in your own hands. The grapes are harvested manually, so that a consistently good quality can be guaranteed.
