The Tilgrup is a largely channeled stream that flows from northeast to southwest along the Appelscha and Smilde forestry areas and through the Dieverveld to the Vledder Aa. Partly, the stream forms the border between the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe. A portion of the stream's catchment area belongs to the Drents-Friese Wold nature park. The stream was channeled in the middle of the 20th century to help drain the area southwest of Smilde together with the Vledder Aa.
