En 1939/1940 se levantó en Pamel un muro de acero con barreras enrolladas (= elementos Cointet o obstáculos antitanque) que zigzagueaba desde el Dender a lo largo de poco más de un kilómetro en dirección a Meerbeke. El Muro de Hierro era parte de una bifurcación de la línea K(oningshooikt-W(aver), bifurcación que iba de Waver a Pamel. La línea KW debía ser un obstáculo para los alemanes, la bifurcación un impedimento para Francia y así expresar la neutralidad de Bélgica. A finales de 1941, los alemanes hicieron desmontar el Muro de Hierro en Pamel.
