Joos Vijd a grandi en tant que jeune homme au château de Singelberg où son père Clais, en tant que prévôt, gérait le château au nom du comte Lodewijk de Male et du duc Philippe le Hardi, seigneurs de Beveren.
Depuis le château de Singelberg, la famille Vijd pouvait contrôler le trafic commercial sur l'Escaut. La forteresse dominait la région et était donc cruciale dans tous les grands conflits militaires qui se déroulaient entre le 14e et le 16e siècle. Le château de Singelberg a également servi de décor à la reddition d'Anvers au représentant italien Alexandre Farnèse (1585, Traité d'Anvers). En 1652, le château, très délabré, a été détruit. Aujourd'hui, il ne reste que le tumulus où se tenait autrefois l'imposante forteresse.
