L'inventeur Claude Chappe a installé un tachygraphe sur la colline l'Étoile. C'était une construction qui lui permettait de transmettre des informations. Cela se trouvait à peu près à l'endroit où se trouve maintenant l'Arc de Triomphe. Cependant, c'était la période juste après la Révolution française. La population ne faisait cependant pas confiance à ces activités. On soupçonnait que des informations secrètes étaient transmises au "ennemi". Une foule en colère s'est dirigée vers la colline pour lyncher Claude Chappe. Il a pu s'enfuir à temps, mais l'appareil a été détruit par la foule.
