Vers la fin du XIème siècle, un collège de chanoines fut institué pour ramener la rigueur dans les habitudes de vie des religieux saint-émilionnais. Il fut alors érigé un couvent avec son cloître et une église romane qui deviendra l'église collégiale. Elevée au XIIème siècle, la nef, ainsi que son porche surmonté d'un clocher rasé, ont conservé leur style roman.
Le choeur date du XIVème siècle et abrite un orgue classé, unique instrument construit en 1892 par Gabriel Cavaillé-Coll, fils du célèbre facteur d'orgues du XIXème siècle, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.
