Il Forte delle Dune, l'unico forte di terra del tipo SERE DE RIVIERES costruito sulla costa, doveva diventare uno dei principali elementi della difesa di Dunkerque. La superficie totale della struttura e del glacis circostante è di 12 ettari. Circa 40.000.000 di mattoni erano necessari per costruirlo tra il 1878 e il 1880. Nel 1940 divenne il comando della 12a DIM sotto il comando del generale Janssen durante l'Operazione Dynamo nel giugno del 1940. Occupato dai tedeschi, divenne parte dell'Atlantikwall e un'appendice della batteria di Zuydcoote.
