Met de bloei van het toerisme aan de kust aan het einde van de 19de eeuw kwam ook de noodzaak aan meer drinkbaar water. Middelkerke groef in haar achtertuin een 9 meter diepe put en verzonk daarin een betonnen watervergaarbak die gevuld zou worden met 500m³ water. Zover is het nooit gekomen... Het grondwater in deze zompige bodem stootte de bak van 213 ton schuin omhoog en sindsdien steekt een flinke hoek lompweg uit de grond.
De Dronkenput kreeg zijn naam doordat de bezoeker zich steeds evenwijdig wil houden met de talrijke schuine pijlers (12°) in de grote ruimte en de waterspiegel die uiteraard vlak blijft, waardoor men een gevoel van evenwichtsverlies krijgt.
