Saint-Omer situeert zich aan de grens tussen Frans Vlaanderen en Artesië (Artois), gelegen aan de rivier de Aa en het Kanaal van Neuffossé. St-Omer telt een drietal belangrijke bezienswaardigheden.
De O-L-Vrouwbasiliek, oorspronkelijk een bescheiden kapel, werd een collegiale kerk en is nu een kathedraal.
Het Sandelinmuseum was vroeger een Jezuîetenkapel en dateert uit 1777. Het bevat prachtige schilderijen van o.a. Brueghel en een collectie porselein.
Voor een wandeling in een park moet je in de Jardin Public zijn. Dit park is gelegen aan de rand van de stad en is 10 hectaren groot. Er zijn Franse en Engelse tuinen aangelegd. Eveneens aan de rand van de stad ligt de ruïne van de St-Bertenabdij.
