Ontdekt in 1905 door de wetenschapper en biospeleoloog Armand VIRÉ. De grot is sinds 1906 geopend voor bezoekers.
Sinds 1961 is de grot toegankelijk per elektrische trein. Deze klimt 400 meter onder de grond om je naar het hart van de heuvel te brengen.
Het bezoek is te voet met een gids. Meteen vanaf het begin, in de Chaoszaal, ontdek je de wondere wereld van het middelpunt van de aarde. Meer dan 150 miljoen jaar geschiedenis, kristallen, sprookjeswerelden en legendarische dieren volgen elkaar in een uur en een kwartier op. Je bezoek eindigt in de Hall of Wonders, 2.000 vierkante meter zwart licht waar fosforescerende concreties de stilte vullen.
