De Plitvice meren zijn in 1979 toegevoegd aan de werelderfgoedlijst van beschermde natuurgebieden van UNESCO.
De 16 meren met daartussen 90 watervallen zijn ontstaan uit een natuurlijk afzettingsproces door het stromende water in dit gebied. In het park rondom de meren vinden vele zeldzame dieren hun onderkomen.
Kortom, dit park is zeker een bezoekje waard als u in Kroatie bent!
