Stavoren obtuvo derechos de ciudad en 1118 y es, por lo tanto, la más antigua de las once ciudades frisias.
En el siglo XIV, la ciudad hanseática era un próspero puerto. La riqueza de antaño se volvió legendaria por la historia de la ‘Mujer de Stavoren’. Debido a su arrogancia, el puerto se llenó de arena.
Con la llegada de los franceses y la implementación del sistema continental, que prohibió el comercio con Inglaterra, la navegación disminuyó y, por lo tanto, también la riqueza de Stavoren.
