Wesel (Niederländisch (veraltet): Wezel) ist eine historische (Festungs)stadt und Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Kreises Wesel im Bundesland Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland. Wesel liegt am Rhein, zwischen dem Ruhrgebiet und der niederländischen Grenze bei Bocholt. Die Stadt hat 60.750 Einwohner. Wesel hat enge Verbindungen zu den Niederlanden und ihrer Geschichte. Während der Einnahme von Wesel (1629) wurde die Stadt von der spanischen Besetzung befreit. Während des Achtzigjährigen Krieges hatte die Stadt eine große Anzahl von protestantisch-niederländischen Flüchtlingen, die vor den spanischen Verfolgungen geflohen waren.
