The Dutch family of Rennes, who bought the castle in 1990, immediately started establishing a vineyard. Joyce van Rennes, a wine expert and daughter of the owner, tells us that wine has been cultivated in this place since the Romans. Somewhere during the Napoleonic era, that culture was lost. The story goes that Napoleon allegedly ordered the vineyards in the Netherlands to be destroyed. Whether that is true or not is unclear, but the fact is that the flourishing wine culture disappeared from this region during that time.
Over the past fifteen years, the vineyard has steadily expanded. In 1991, the family began planting 2,350 vines on 4,500 square meters. The castle's vineyard now spans sixteen hectares. Of that, only one hectare is left for Pinot Noir for the red wine. In addition to Chardonnay, the Van Rennes also produce various types of eau de vie.
