The oldest tree in Belgium, a Limburg oak, stands on the private domain of Hex Castle. The oak tree 'Charles-Henry' is said to be 800 to 900 years old.
Fifty years ago, the father of Count d'Ursel of Hex found buttons made of clothing on the inside of the tree. After examination, the buttons turned out to be from a 'sansculotte', a poorer soldier from the French Revolution. Probably the man deserted and thought he was hiding his clothes in the tree.
Most people think that the so-called 'thousand-year-old oak' of Lummen is the oldest, but that is a misunderstanding. That tree has also been around for a few years, but is barely half as old as 'Charles-Henry'.
