Lootvoet Brewery

In Overijse, on the corner of the Waversesteenweg and the IJseweg, lies the domain of Brouwerij Lootvoet.
The last brewer there was Albert Lootvoet, scion of a brewing family from Beveren aan de IJzer.
His father Valère founded the "Brasserie de la Fontaine" in Overijse, known for its "Sport Ale". After the war it was renamed "R.A.F" and during WW II its "zero-huit".
In 1948 the "Gold Scotch" was introduced, later followed by the "Rubens beer" in the Rubens year, and the "Ketje" on the occasion of 1000 years of Brussels.
In 1952, Abbot Nys met Albert Lootvoet, a brewer in Overijse, and told him about the abbey's financial problems. Albert Lootvoet, in collaboration with the abbot, decided to revive the brewing activities of Leffe Abbey, while retaining the old recipe. In 1952, for example, a brown Leffe was brewed again, with immediate success. There are four types of Leffe beer, each with its own character. Major investments were necessary in the Lootvoet brewery in order to meet the growing consumer demand. For example, in 1977 Albert Lootvoet received financial support from another brewery, Artois. Production was transferred from Overijse to Mont-Saint-Guibert. In 1987, with the merger of Artois and Piedboeuf, the Interbrew brewery was created, a brewery that still brews beer according to the old tradition in close collaboration with the monks of the abbey.
In 2005, the vacant Lootvoet Brewery was given a modern conversion into 13 apartments with a cozy courtyard.
