Saint Sixtus Abbey

Before the current Trappist abbey was founded, three monasteries were established here over the centuries. In 1831, a new Cistercian monastery was founded: the Trappist Priory, which was elevated to the current Saint Sixtus Abbey in 1871. As early as 1836, an old brewery was purchased and installed within the monastery buildings. In 1838, the monks started brewing the world-famous Trappist beer Westvleteren.
Nowadays, three beers are brewed: Trappist Westvleteren Blond (5.8°), Acht (8°) and Twelve (10.2°). Annual production is limited to about 4,800 hectolitres. In 2005 and in 2012, the Westvleteren Twelve was named the best beer in the world by the website Ratebeer.com. The abbey and the brewery are not open to the public. Right in front of the abbey, you can get to know life in the abbey and the brewery in an interactive way in the Claustrum, in the meeting centre 'In de Vrede'. And only here is the real Trappist of Westvleteren donated and also sold to private individuals.
