Karim Export is one of the area’s leading car transport businesses. To the right of the gate you can read the destinations where the second-hand cars go to. In recent years, however, business has not been quite so good. Some African countries are applying stricter import standards: cars that are too old and polluting are no longer allowed in. In addition, the car trade is gradually feeling greater pressure from the regional mobility policy, and the smart kilometre-based charge and the total diesel ban present added difficulties. Finally, in its master plan for the Heyvaert district, the Region would like to attract new economic activities that cause less nuisance. The car trade will gradually have to make way for this. Some traders, realising this, are transforming themselves into property owners and thinking about converting their properties into apartments. They are allowed to do this provided there is space for businesses left on the ground floor.
