This is the route of the unique Wuppertal Suspension Railway. It is a remarkable architectural solution to a mobility problem. It was already built in 1901 and is thus the world's oldest hanging monorail and a unique public transport system. Designed by engineer Eugen Langen, operations began on March 1, 1901, after a test ride by Emperor Wilhelm II in October 1900. The line is approximately 13.3 kilometers long and runs mostly above the River Wupper, at a height of about 12 meters, connecting the districts of Oberbarmen, Elberfeld, Barmen, and Vohwinkel with a total of 20 stations.

The Suspension Railway arose from the need for efficient transportation in the narrow Wupper valley, where lack of space made it impossible to lay conventional railways. The hanging railway floats above the river and partly above the streets, allowing the traffic below to continue uninterrupted. The structure consists of a steel support framework made of 19,200 tons of iron and cost 16 million goldmarks at the time.

In addition to its functional role as a means of transport, the Suspension Railway is also a tourist attraction. During a ride, one experiences unique panoramas of the city, residential areas, factories, and parks, all while floating above the river. The journey takes about 30 minutes and is a special way to explore Wuppertal.

The Suspension Railway has a rich history and has been a protected monument since 1997. There is also a museum and a virtual experience (Schwebodrom) where visitors can discover the history and experience of the hanging railway. With millions of passengers annually, the Suspension Railway remains an icon of Wuppertal and a technical marvel from the early 20th century.
